“In each case the difference in plant growth, root structure, and overall healthy look of the plants was noticeable and measurable.”

Tristan and Conner Shaw

— Connor Shaw,
Owner of Possibility Place Nursery

Two generations prove it, nursery plants need bottom heat too! Connor Shaw, of Possibility Place Nursery, in Monee, a small town south of Chicago, has two areas of his nursery with BioTherm bottom heat. The first was installed 20 years ago and is still in operation today. Connor indicates that the original tubes remain but he added on to the system when he expanded the benches. It is functioning as well today as it did 20 years ago. Based on that experience, about 2 years ago, Connor and his son, Tristan, added a new area of BioTherm heat. This one was entirely TrueLeaf from the boiler to the MicroClimate tubing.

Why use BioTherm MicroClimate heat? Connor indicated that he has done a couple of side by side comparisons of his plants with and without the BioTherm system and “in each case, the difference in plant growth, root structure, and overall healthy look of the plants was noticeable and measurable.”

Possibility Place Nursery has a niche in the market. For the Northern Illinois area and some in Southern Wisconsin and Western Indiana, they provide “ Native” plants. Started in 1978, Possibility has grown from the original 5 acres to now encompassing 55 acres. In addition, Possibility Place Nursery does not use chemicals to get a fibrous root system. They avoid chemical use whenever possible. The nursery has not used an insecticide, miticide, or fungicide spray for 15 years. They do use post and pre-emergent herbicides and organic and inorganic fertilizers. Fittingly for such an organization, they do not believe in the status quo. They are constantly testing species, fertilizers, soil mixes and transplant ability. Connor, who has a B.S. in forest hydrology and a M.S. in wild land hydrology, said he “believes that the customer’s success in growing plants begins with us at the nursery. Many of these studies are performed in-house, while others are performed elsewhere. In these outside studies, we have either donated plant material, consulting, or both.”

Many times their plants are sold directly to the environmental groups or individuals who desire to go back to nature. Connor has close to 1,000,000 seeds from Native plants and grows close to 95% of the plants he sells from those seeds. Connor guarantees the dormant plants he sells will bud, and thus the strength and the durability of his crop is of utmost importance to his bottom line. So in this case, the BioTherm MicroClimate system does, in fact, contribute directly to the bottom line.
